A Joburg Conversation with Papama Ramogase

By Joburg Post

Paps, are you aware of the fact that you are considered, a cool and stylish trendsetter?

Hahaha... Definitely not aware of that...

At what point did you realize that becoming a fashion designer /Stylist is a viable career path?

I’ve always had a passion for creating unique things from scratch. During my 3rd year at design school, I decided that I wanted to try out styling because I had already acquired the skill of designing and making garments. I then decided to do an internship at a magazine’s fashion department and I fell in love with styling immediately. Styling and designing feed off each other, hence 23 years later, I’m still doing both.

Do you consider yourself to be an artist or a fashion designer?

I consider myself a creator.

We are in the business of spreading this powerful truth, so the bigger the audience, the better it is for us. As Africans, there's no better time than NOW, to get up and start taking ownership of our FUTURE.

What influences your style and designs?

I’m influenced by so much! Shapes, colour, people, music and travelling

You travel a lot, what place fascinated you the most in your travels?

Oh, what a difficult question to answer... It doesn’t take too much to intrigue me because I enjoy the simplest of things and moments...  Basically, every city that I’ve visited has given me something - whether it was the people, the food, the architecture, the nightlife or the natural landscape. Istanbul, Singapore and Trouville-sur-Mer in France are in my top 7!

Does travelling and visiting different places enhance your creativity?

Absolutely. I believe that everyone is the sum total of all their experiences

Who are your favourite local designers to watch out for?

Thebe Magugu is incredible. Everything he puts out is so considered. I like Imprint and Ezokhetho too.

Did u ever consider getting into menswear?

Most of the stuff we do is unisex.

You have taken your brand internationally, especially your signature T-shirt range 'Africa Your Time is Now, it has proved quite popular.

What an incredible journey it has been.  We are in the business of spreading this powerful truth, so the bigger the audience, the better it is for us. As Africans, there's no better time than NOW, to get up and start taking ownership of our FUTURE.
We have all the wisdom, skill, heritage, power, resources and innate know-how to make our continent a 1st world habitat. We've ALWAYS had!
