MMC Mabaso opens affordable rental building in Jeppestown

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso, yesterday launched an affordable housing rental building in Jeppestown in the inner city.

Skosana Courts is an affordable housing project for rentals aimed at providing residents with affordable and decent accommodation. The 136-unit, three block building is named after deceased local leader Phumlani Skosana.

“It’s befitting to name this building after Skosana for the active role he played in fighting illegal occupation of buildings in the Jeppestown and the inner city. He fought for the rights of residents of Jeppestown,” said MMC Mabaso.

“Skosana did not only belong to his family, but to the community as a whole as he went beyond the call of duty to ensure that he took the government to task about issues affecting the community of Jeppestown.”

Cllr Mabaso committed to acquiring more buildings in the inner city to convert them into decent accommodation in the city. He called on the local leadership to work with residents to protect the buildings and not expose tenants to criminality.

An emotional Thembelihle Skosana thanked the City for keeping her brother’s memory alive.  “As the family, we are humbled by this gesture. If we could, we would wake him up to see what see the legacy he left behind in ward 61.”

The allocation of residents is expected to resume early next year and communication will be done by the department and the Joburg Social Housing Company.
