Bafana Bafana shocked Africa’s number one ranked side Morocco with a 2-0 victory in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) last 16 clash at the Laurent Pokou Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Goals by Evidence Makgopa and Teboho Mokoena in the second half were enough to see Hugo Broos' side advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

In the opening half of the encounter, Morocco had a slight edge over Bafana Bafana, creating more scoring opportunities however, the solid defence of Bafana Bafana denied Morocco any goal.

As the teams went into halftime at 0-0, Makgopa broke the deadlock in the 57th minute after a through pass by Themba Zwane.

It was his first goal of the tournament, the goal saw The Atlas Lions starting to push more forward in search of an equaliser, but they struggled to breach the South African’ defence marshalled by Mothobi Mvala and Grant Kekana.

In the 68th minute, Bafana Bafana mentor Hugo Broos brought on Thapelo Maseko for Themba Zwane.

The Atlas Lions kept pouring forward, desperately searching for an equaliser.

The immense pressure finally paid off as Morocco won a penalty after Mvala handled the ball in the penalty box.

Achraf Hakimi stepped up to take the penalty, and he blasted the spot-kick over the bar.

Midfielder Sofyan Amrabat was red carded just a minute into added time after a foul on Mokoena and from the resultant free-kick, the 2023/24 footballer of the year scored the second goal for Broos' charges.

Bafana Bafana next take on Cape Verde in the quaterfinals on Saturday the 3rd of January 2024.
