ICYMI: ANC in Ekurhuleni snub the new mayor's mayoral committee announcement

By Tshegofatso Makola

It has been just week since the election of Sivuyile Ngodwana as the new Executive Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni and he seems to already be hard at work, having announced his chosen Mayoral Committee.

It's half-and-half, with not a single member from Ngodwana's party African Independent Congress (AIC) in his Mayoral Committee.

A true reflection of politicking, the committee sees five members from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and five others, allegedly from the African National Congress (ANC). Despite this, the ANC was no where to be seen in the swearing-in ceremony.

With no explaination as to why the ANC was not in attendance, the EFF members chosen as MMCs were sworn in.

As it stands, only five MMCs are known:

  • Nkululeko Dunga, who is the chairperson of the EFF in the province, but will also occupy the position of MMC of finance, ICT and service delivery co-ordination
  • Eunice Matloga, who will be the new MMC for waste and environmental services
  • Kgopelo Hollo who will occupy the position of MMC for real estate
  •  Leshaka Manamela, who will be the MMC for water, sanitation and energy, and
  • Bridget Thusi, the new MMC for health and social development

With the EFF now occupying five Mayoral Committee positions as well as the position of Speaker of Council, one may argue that it will hold more power in council in the near future.

One can also argue that this has resulted in some of the rising tensions in the ANC-EFF led coalition, with the Patriotic Alliance- a key member, having been left out of the new appointments.

Meanwhile, questions are looming over Sivuyile Ngodwana's  competence to lead the City.

With not a single member of his three seat party being appointed as an MMC, the message is as clear as day regarding the kind of leadership that Ekurhuleni is set to experience.
