The City of Johannesburg's proposed budget of over R80 billion has been passed in council.

The tabled budget passed with 166 votes while 68 members went against it on Wednesday the 14th of June 2023.

Immediately after the passing of the budget, Joburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda said the budget would be put to good use.

“I would like to thank the MMC for finance and his team, although we are in difficult times, I am confident that the professional nature of those that are employed in leadership positions will be able to implement this budget in a manner that would yield tangible change and progress," Gwamanda said.

The budget includes the city's operational expenditure of R73.3 billion, the capital expenditure of R7.6 billion, and a three-year capital budget of R24.4 billion.

ActionSA supported the budget but said it was aware it was presented against the backdrop of a fragile economic environment, the negative performance of the domestic economy and the constrained affordability by households.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) voted against the budget, saying that while the property tariff was only 2%, it is quite evident that the increases are hidden elsewhere in the tariff increases.
