The Presidency sets the record straight on ICC allegations

The Presidency has cleared confusion that South Africa has intentions to exit the International Criminal Court (ICC), adding that the this was an error in the comment and that the country will remain a signatory to the Rome Statute.

This comes following comments made during the African National Congress (ANC) media briefing held on Tuesday, as well as what the Presidency describes as the erroneous affirmation of this stance as well.

In a statement, the Presidency expressed that the ANC NEC considered withdrawing from the statute as a last resort if there were no additional legal options, adding that the country would now be working on  invigorate the Malabo protocol that would establish a continental criminal court that would complement the ICC.

The government has been under pressure lately to give their stance on  Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is due to visit this country later year for the BRICS summit.

With the ICC having issued an arrest warrant for Putin for having a hand in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, South Africa’s ally-ship is set to be tested.
