By Lindelwa Masuku
Today, South Africa mourns Zoleka Mandela's cancer battle while honouring her legacy, and concurrently pays tribute to the iconic Winnie Mandela with the unveiling of Winnie Mandela Drive in Johannesburg.
Today, South Africa grapples with both loss and tribute as the nation mourns the passing of Zoleka Mandela, granddaughter of anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela.
Zoleka, a courageous author and advocate, detailed her prolonged battle against cancer in her 2013 biography, 'When Hope Whispers,' inspiring many with her unwavering spirit and determination to raise awareness about cancer prevention and break down the stigma surrounding the disease.
In a fitting tribute, Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda has announced the renaming of a prominent road in the city to Winnie Mandela Drive, in honour of Nelson Mandela's second wife and anti-apartheid activist.
This renaming coincides with what would have been Winnie Mandela's 87th birthday, a symbolic gesture acknowledging her immense contributions to the struggle for freedom and justice.
Today’s events serve as a reminder of the indelible marks left by the Mandela family on South Africa's history.
As the nation remembers Zoleka Mandela and pays tribute to Winnie Mandela, it is a moment of reflection and unity, embodying the spirit of perseverance and resilience that defines the collective identity of South Africa.
