Class of 2022 Makes the Country Proud

The Matric Results of 2022 were announced on 19 January 2023, with the Top achievers being in attendance to receive their awards at the technical briefing preceding the announcements.

A 3% improvement, a 10% increase in girl-learner’s staying in school and not a single province performing below 70%. These are achievements of the Matric Class of 2022.

With this class being described as the best yet, despite having the second highest average since the class of 2019, the country has a lot to celebrate.

Despite the wide range of criticism from various organisations and individuals about what has been described as 30% pass benchmark, the Results have reflected that less than 1% of the 80% of candidates were endorsed whilst almost 300 thousand candidates earned a bachelor pass.

With the Free State maintaining their number 1 position in the country, once again, all provinces made improvements for 2022.

Gauteng placed second, with an 88,4% pass  rate, which proved to be an increase of 1.6% from the previous year.

The Joburg Post managed to catch up with Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga after the announcement of the results and we spoke to her about how she felt about the class of 2022’s performance.

Motshekga expressed that the improvement from the dip over the past 2 years, shows that the department is moving up the trajectory quite well.

When speaking on the how the department helps learners who aren’t among the 80,1% of those who passed Matric, the Minister reiterated the Second Chance Matric Programme that provides learners with support to upgrade their NSC or Senior Certificate qualification.

Motshekga further expressed that the closing date for those wishing to apply for the Programme is 8 February 2023, adding that those wishing to rewrite may do so either in June or December 2023.

The Joburg Post would like to congratulate the class of 2022 and wish them the very best in their future endeavours.
