Gauteng MEC of Education Announces Matric Results for the Province

A day to truly celebrate the heroes and achievers of the Education system in Gauteng. That is exactly what took place at the Soshanguve East Secondary School on 20 January 2023. This is as the Gauteng Department of Education announced its results today.

Despite placing second place in the country, Gauteng has seemingly maintained its standard, even making a 1.6% improvement in its pass rate with 88,4% of candidates have passed their matric year in the province.

With Gauteng being one of the provinces that produced among the highest BD passes, MEC of Education in Gauteng, Matome Chiloane has expressed how proud he is of the province.

Given that most of the Class of 2022 experienced two of their years in high school attending on a rotational basis, this did not result in a drop in performance with all provinces have seen an improvement from the previous year.

Despite the high number of candidates that registered to write their NSC exams in Gauteng, this proved to not affect them, with their performance statistics proving this.

Among these include:
- 290 schools achieved above 90%
- 149 schools achieved 100% in comparison to the 131 in 2021

The Premier of the Province, Panyaza Lesufi was also in attendance, even addressing educators, students, and other members in attendance.

Lesufi emphasised that the results achieved don't belong to the department, but rather, they belong to the teachers.

The Joburg Post caught up with Sibusiso Mathebula, from IR Lesolang Secondary School. The seemingly joyous young man, who we saw among the National Top Achievers, expressed that he was overwhelmed with joy.

Mathebula placed 3rd overall within Gauteng and managed to achieve many awards throughout the day. When asked what his plans were, he expressed that he plans to study Astrophysics at the University of Cape Town.

He advised future matriculants to keep on working hard but still find time to rest, adding that prayer also helped him through his matric year.

We spoke to one of the top achievers in the province, Emily Jane Hawks from Pretoria High School for Girls, who also gave us insight into what it meant to be among the top in the province.

Hawkes expressed that she remembers her matric year as one that was busy and filled with many responsibilities, but she still managed to persevere through managing her time well.

Hawkes further expressed that she intends on studying Actuary Science at the University of Pretoria.

With the Class of 2022 having collected their statements of results from their respective schools today, the questions then turn to University placements and acceptance.

Almost 300 000 candidates nationally have qualified to go to university, and with the limited space available, one can only anticipate what the next few days will hold.
