A Closer Look into Black Motion's Split : Reasons Behind Music Group Dissolutions

Heartbreak and disappointment filled the air as fans of the beloved duo, Black Motion, received the news of their sudden breakup in November 2022. 

After years of making music together and winning the hearts of countless fans, the duo members announced that they will be going their separate ways.

The news came as a shock to many, as the highly acclaimed duo was set to make an appearance at the Tastic Heritage Festival. Fans were shocked to see a new member of Black Motion, Kamo, seemingly replacing Mörda, the original member of Black Motion, previously known as Murdah Bongz.

Rumours that the duo had split started after Murdah Bongz released a new solo album.
The album was dedicated to his and DJ Zinhle’s daughter, Asante.

There seems to be a conflict between the duo, as Murdah Bongz was recently served with a court order to return all the studio equipment he took as the group separated.

We see music groups splitting all the time, there are several reasons why groups split, from financial issues to different creative ideas.

Let’s have a look at some popular groups that have split.

Liquid deep

A band that graced us with their beautiful dance music, they released Fairytale in 2009 and later released their album Fabrics of the heart which took South Africa by storm.
The duo parted ways in 2014 to work on their own personal and solo music careers.

Teargas

The hip-hop group dominated the airwaves and had fans all across the country hooked to their hits. The trio consisted of Ma-E, Ntukza, and K.O. The trio says that they went their separate ways in 2014 when unresolved issues mounted and eventually spiralled out of control, leading each member to go solo.

Jozi

In the mid to late 2000s, artists, Ishmael, Bongani Fassie, Da L.E.S, and Crazy Lou formed a hip-hop krunk group, Jozi. The group became a major success, they released the hit song What’s With The Attitude which was a club favourite in the country. The group then decided to split and focus on their solo careers not long after that.

Destiny’s child

The highly acclaimed, Grammy award-winning trio, Destiny’s Child, by . This iconic trio after years of together initially going into a hiatus in 2001, to pursue their solo careers, they reunited two years later and released their critically acclaimed fifth and final album, Destiny Fulfilled in 2004.
They officially parted ways in 2005, in their statement to their fans, they said, 

"After all these wonderful years working together, we realised that now is the time to pursue our personal goals and solo efforts in earnest … No matter what happens, we will always love each other as friends and sisters and will always support each other as artists."

Migos

The popular, international Hip Hop group Migos by Offset, Takeoff, and Quavo.
The trio had an internal conflict which resulted in one of the members, Offset, filing a lawsuit against the group’s label and later being released from the project in August 2022.

Very soon after this, Quavo and Takeoff continued to move forward with their careers as a duo while Offset is pursuing his solo career.

The news of Black Motion’s breakup is just another example of a music group parting ways, joining the ranks of other popular South African and international groups who have gone their separate ways. 

It is clear that the music industry is ever-changing, and as artists grow and evolve, their goals and visions may change, leading to the formation of new groups or a focus on solo careers.

Fans may be disappointed by the news of Black Motion’s breakup, but it is important to remember that the music and memories they have created will always remain. 

As the iconic Destiny’s Child stated in their statement to their fans, “No matter what happens, we will always love each other as friends and sisters and will always support each other as artists.”

One can only hope that the members of Black Motion will continue to produce great music and memories for their fans, whether it be as a duo or as solo artists. 

The future is uncertain, but the music lives on.
