Amakhosi through to the last 8 of the Nedbank Cup

Kaizer Chiefs advanced to the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup after defeating Motsepe Foundation Championship side Casric Stars 2-1 at the FNB Stadium on Sunday night.

Heading into the encounter at the back of a 1-0 victory against Richards Bay FC in the DSTV Premiership last weekend, Chiefs were keen on keeping the same momentum to the Nedbank Cup as the quest to end the trophy drought continues.

Chiefs exerted pressure on the visitors in the opening exchanges and they were awarded a penalty after Mumuni Abubakar was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.

Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana then stepped up and converted the resultant penalty to hand the home side the lead 11 minutes into the encounter.

In a cagey affair during the first half, the two sides continued to have a go at each other but some poor decision making in front of goal on either side saw the teams head into halftime with Chiefs still leading.

The Motsepe Foundation Championship side came back rejuvenated following their halftime team talk as Kgomotso Mosadi levelled matters in the 62nd minute after Amakhosi had failed to clear their lines in the penalty box.

The Glamour Boys wouldn’t trail for long, though, as Ashley Du Preez restored their lead, tapping home a square-ball from Keagan Dolly.

The 64th minute goal sealed Chiefs' 2-1 win over Casric Stars as the victory also meant Arthur Zwane's men have reached the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2019.

The Soweto giants became the eighth and final team to reach this season's quarter-finals draw alongside Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, Dondol Stars, Stellenbosch FC and Sekhukhune United just to name a few.

Amakhosi will next face Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium on the 18th of March.
