ANC NEC Concludes its Two-Day Lekgotla

The ANC’s NEC Lekgotla has came to a close today, after two days of discussions behind closed doors. The Lekgotla is the first of the year and saw outcomes that could be tabled before government.

Closing the Lekgotla, party President Cyril Ramaphosa gave a brief summary of the two-day event. According to Ramaphosa, discussions were held to speak on the energy crisis and service delivery.

Ramaphosa expressed that calls were made during the Lekgotla for a National State of Disaster to be declared to fix the energy crisis.

Work is already underway within government to establish whether the legal requirements for the declaration of a national state of disaster are met and what specific actions we would be empowered to undertake to urgently resolve load shedding”- ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa

Ramaphosa said that the NEC has expressed its wish to resolve load shedding within 12 months, and has set out the actions to achieve this task.

He further added that the Lekgotla has seen discussions held regarding the challenges around infrastructure development. 

Some of the matters discussed include: 
  • The agreement to prioritise infrastructure that affects people directly (ie. electricity, water, etc.)
  • The strengthening of the fight against crime and corruption, it was addressed that this needs to start at community level.
  • Gender-based violence and femicide

Ramaphosa expressed the NEC’s concern on the safety of whistleblowers adding that they have called for the improvement of witnesses protection programme especially for whistleblowers. 

The party President concluded his address expressing that they have come to the Lekgotla to reconfirm their decisions, adding that they have come up with more solutions.

Following the conclusion of the Lekgotla, the party Secretary General Fikile Mbalula addressed the media.

According to Mbalula, details on the party’s coalitions will be discussed tomorrow with the media.
