Another earthquake for Syria and Turkey

By Tshegofatso Makola

Turkey and Syria have suffered yet another earthquake, two weeks after the catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit both countries two weeks ago. The earthquake occurred last night, and has since resulted in six deaths and many injuries.

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake has struck the border-region of Turkey and Syria yesterday. This, after two weeks since the massive earthquake affected both countries killing over 47 000 people.

The earthquake was the first of its kind in over a century and saw tremors shortly afterward that leveled more homes and infrastructure.

According to officials in both countries, 26 aftershocks have been experienced since the recent earthquake and many citizens are still filled with panic given that it is not the first time.

Rescue efforts are currently underway with officials advising citizens to not enter damaged buildings in hopes to fetch belongings. The freezing temperatures and non-accommodating weather has since made rescue efforts much more difficult.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has since expressed that the situation is being assessed and that they will provide assistance where needed.

This is a developing story. More updates to follow.
