Bayern knock out PSG in the last 16

Second half goals from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Serge Gnabry were enough to see Bayern Munich eliminate French Ligue 1 giants  Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League last 16 tie at the Allianz Arena in Germany.

Bayern went to the encounter with a 1-0 aggregate score after defeating PSG in the first leg in Paris on the 14th of February 2023.

With the first half being rather a dull affair between two sides playing without risk, Bayern thought they had the lead after the break when Choupo-Moting flicked on a cross into the net but the move was ruled offside after Thomas Muller attempted seemingly unsuccessful to get the final touch.

Choupo-Moting would not be denied for the second time as he eventually got his goal from tapping home after PSG's Marco Verratti was dispossessed inside his own penalty area before Bayern worked the ball into the striker to score.

The second goal came late on the break and was a combination between the substitutes Joao Cancelo, who picked out Serge Gnabry for a pinpoint finish into the bottom corner to put PSG on the canvas.

Bayern then consolidated matters until the final whistle to join Chelsea, Benfica and AC Milan in the quarterfinals of Europe's elite league.

Meanwhile the loss for PSG means that the French side will complete the season without another Champions League title as they have always fallen short in the knockout phase of the competition.

It's also another season without a Champions League for Lionel Messi, the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup winner last won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2014/15 and with the 35 year old out of contract at the end of the season with PSG, this might have well been his final act in a competition he has won four times.

The next set of the last 16 encounters commences next week Tuesday with Porto hosting Inter Milan at the Estádio do Dragão Stadium.

Milan head into the encounter holding a slender 1-0 aggregate advantage while at the Etihad Stadium in England, Manchester City will welcome RB Leipzig in another fixture on Tuesday night.

City and the German side played out to a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Germany two weeks ago.

The last 16 fixtures will then conclude on Wednesday with Napoli welcoming Eintracht Frankfurt at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

The Italian giants will look to comfortably progress to the last 8 after defeating Frankfurt 2-0 in the first leg a fortnight ago in Germany.

Real Madrid and Liverpool complete the round of 16 action with a date at the Santiago Bernabéu in Spain on Wednesday night with the defending champions having the upper hand from the first leg.

Madrid hammered Jurgen Klopp's charges 5-2 during the first leg at Anfield with Karim Benzema and Vinícius Jnr. both scoring a brace in the process.
