The Minister of basic education  announced last week that due to the Maths Paper 2 and Physical Science Paper 2 being leaked, pupils throughout the country will need to rewrite them.

Teacher unions, educational stake holders as well as COSAS have disputed this decision , stating that leaners must not suffer due to the department's decision. Education stakeholder and teachers’ union are heading to court to challenge the decision.

According to EWN The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union’s (Sadtu) Nomusa Cembi has labelled the move as premature.

“We will be applying for an urgent court interdict on the decision of the department to make all the learners rewrite these two papers. We feel that this decision is unfair and premature.”

The National Professional Teacher's Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa) also told the department and law enforcement agencies to properly investigate the matter in order to spare over 400 000 of matriculants from rewriting the exams. .

The Congress of South African Students (Cosas) has  also urged leaners to refute from rewriting the exams.  Cosas’s Douglas Ngobeni said they reject Motshekga's announcement, and the department's failure to resolve the matter without putting the strain on the leaners of having to write the paper again will result them in challenging the decision in a court room
"The Department of Basic Education has made a blunder by not first engaging the stakeholders in the education sector when they took that decision." says Ngobeni
