Death toll continues to rise in Turkish- Syrian earthquake

The death toll following the Syrian-Turkey earthquake has risen once again to over 16 000. This is as search and rescue operations are still underway in the region. Despite this, the search for aid still continues for Syria as sanctions affect them.

Over 16 000 lives have been recorded to have been lost within the Syrian and Turkish region so far. This following the fatal 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit the region a few days.

Since the earthquake hit a few days ago, many humanitarian organisations have since sent aid in efforts to ease the damage in the regions.

The earthquake was the first of its kind in over a century and saw tremors shortly afterward leaving many dead and injured, as well as thousands of others missing and trapped underneath the rubble.

Despite some humanitarian efforts that have been distributed to the region, concerns have been raised about the The World Health Organization (WHO) has underlined the importance of ensuring that people who have survived the quake “continue to survive” adding that there’s a possibility of a secondary disaster which may cause harm to more people than the initial disaster. 

The organisation expressed that those living in the region need the basic elements to survive the next period.

Rescue missions have since been hampered by cold weather conditions and an excess amount of rubble and waste from collapsed infrastructure. 

Despite this, humanitarian organisations and search teams have not given up on the search, with time ticking for victims that are still stuck under rubble, as expressed by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
