Eric Mathoho's season seems to be over

Kaizer Chiefs defender Eric "Tower" Mathoho's DSTV Premiership season seems to have unfortunately ended with 8 more matches to go.

The lanky defender has been out of action for Chiefs for the larger part of the season due to injuries and it doesn't seem like he will be back anytime soon.

Coach Arthur Zwane suggested Mathoho might miss the rest of the season as Kaizer Chiefs advanced to the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup on Sunday night after defeating Motsepe Foundation Championship side Casric Stars 2-1 at the FNB Stadium.

"I don't want to lie, he has been out of action for some time now and we don't know when will he recover, as things stand he has not even started to jog and that alone tells you that his return is not going to happen anytime soon," Zwane said.

Undoubtedly one of the most experienced centre backs Chiefs have, Mathoho was last seen in action on the 17th of September 2022 during their 2-1 victory against SuperSport United at the FNB Stadium and that was also his first appearance for the club in the current campaign.

With Mathoho's absence, Chiefs has seen the likes of Edmilson Dove rise to the occasion and fill the gap with ease while Siyabonga Ngezana and Zitha Kwinika have also cemented their spots at the back.

"Should he recover sooner than later though, we will be happy to have him back because of his experience at the back and we are also well aware of what he can do for us at the back," Zwane added.

With Amakhosi's aspirations of playing in the CAF Champions League next season, Mathoho and Chiefs will hope the 33 year old will recover quickly in order to stabilise the defence of the team should they qualify for the Champions League.

The Glamour Boys who are sitting comfortably on the 4th spot in the league 5 points adrift of the second spot will travel to the Harry Gwala Stadium for a date with Maritzburg United on Saturday night as they continue their quest of fighting for the second spot in the league.

Kick-off at the Harry Gwala Stadium is at 20:00.
