High Court Grants Ramaphosa an Urgent Interdict Against Private Prosecution

President Cyril Ramaphosa has escaped the prospect of appearing in a courtroom this week. This comes as the Joburg High caught granted the president an interdict against the private prosecution brought against him by his predecessor, Jacob Zuma.

Zuma has accused Ramaphosa of being an accessory after the case he has filed against News 24 journalist, Karyn Maughan and Senior State Advocate Billy Downer for leaking his private medical information during his Arm’s Deal Trial.

With Ramaphosa having been expected to appear in court on Thursday this week, the decision by the Joburg High Court sees the head of state no longer having to appear in court.

Prior to this decision, President Cyril Ramaphosa had expressed his confidence arguing that his summoning to court by the former President, did not meet the requirements for a valid private prosecution.

Meanwhile, journalist, Karyn Maughan has since broken her silence adding that Ramaphosa would only be held liable in the court of law if she, too, alongside Downer were convicted for the charges against them as well.

With a victory from Ramaphosa on this matter, some have expressed their dissatisfaction with the High Court’s Decision.

With the Jacob Zuma Foundation not ruling out an appeal of the court’s decision, one can only believe that the "battle of the Presidents" is far from over.
