Is the Mayoral Journey Nearing its End for Dr. Mpho Phalatse?

By Tshegofatso Makola

26 January 2023 is D-day for City of Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse. This is as she faces yet another motion of no confidence, that is set to be on the agenda for Joburg City Council Meeting today.

Joburg Mayor, Mpho Phalatse, who has appeared to be a cat with nine lives, will hear her fate in what will be the third motion of no confidence since entering the office.

With the two biggest parties in the coalition, ActionSA and the DA, not seeing each other eye to eye, the predictions of the motion’s outcome are not in Phalatse’s favour.

The two parties are at loggerheads of which ActionSA has accused the DA of ruining the deal between the Patriotic Alliance (PA).

In a surprise move, the Patriotic Alliance has turned their back from the DA and has voiced their intentions to vote against Phalatse.

This as growing frustration from the party has seen them express anger on what they have described as “bullying” from the DA.

With ActionSA offering its two positions in the City of Joburg to the PA to prevent an ANC return to office, the DA has been hesitant to work with the PA.

The mayor is not new to this controversy. In September last year, she was removed from office, but was reinstated after three weeks after taking the matter to court.

The second attempt to see Phalatse removed saw the motion of no-confidence withdrawn in the last minute by the African Independent Congress.

What is expected to be the final attempt will see the three-motions filed against her last week, forming a part of the City’s Council sitting today.

Meanwhile, the mayor as well as MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Cllr Michael Sun and the CEO of City Power, Ms Tshifularo Mashava, are set to brief members of the media on the state of City Power and the interventions to manage and mitigate rolling blackouts.

Will the third time be the charm for opposition parties looking to remove Phalatse?
