Messi beats Mbappe and Benzema to claim the top prize

Argentina and PSG forward Lionel Messi won The Best FIFA men's player of the year award during the Best FIFA Football Awards at the Salle Pleyel in Paris; France on Monday night.

Messi beat his Paris Saint-Germain teammate and FIFA World Cup final rival, Kylian Mbappe to the men's gong with Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema the other contender to claim the prize.

Messi who captained Argentina during the 2022 FIFA World Cup glory in Qatar, and scored 27 goals in 49 games for club and country in 2021-22 mentioned that it has been an amazing year for him and it is such an honour to be crowned the best football men's player of the year again.

"I achieved the dream I had been hoping for and I am grateful, I don't think if it wasn't for my teammates I would have been here, I am extremely grateful for the tremendous year I have had," Messi said.

It is the second time that Messi has won the honour inaugurated by Fifa in 2016 after football's world governing body split from Ballon d'Or organisers France Football.

With a pair of gongs, Messi joins Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski as two-time winners and in the seven editions of the ceremony, Messi has only been out of the top 3 once and was a narrow runner-up to Robert Lewandowski 12 months ago.

Meanwhile Messi's national team head coach Lionel Scaloni who led Argentina to their third World Cup title, was named men's coach of the year.

Scaloni beat Pep Guardiola who guided Manchester City to a sixth Premier League title and Real Madrid's UEFA Champions League winning boss Carlo Ancelotti to the honour.

Scaloni renewed his contract after meeting with AFA president Claudio Tapia in Paris on Monday, taking him through to the next World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

It was an all Argentine affair at the awards as Aston Villa and Argentina's Emiliano Martinez was recognised as the best men's goalkeeper of the year.

Martinez who helped Argentina win the FIFA World Cup saved four penalties in the tournament along with a brilliant performance in the shootout victory against France in the final of the showpiece.

In other notable awards, Alexia Putellas won the best women's player of the year award retaining the women's prize despite having an injury that saw her spend most of her second half of last year out injured.

Putellas beat Beth Mead and Alex Morgan to the crown making sure that she adds another individual trophy to the Ballon d'Or, which she has also won last year.

In a night where football stars were being celebrated and honoured for their contribution to the advancement and success of football in the past year, FIFA President Gianni Infantino paid tribute to the late Brazilian star Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known by his nickname Pelé.

Infantino thanked Pelé's family for attending the Awards in Paris and in his speech he mentioned that Pelé was football personified.

Pele's widow Marcia Aoki was also in attendance to collect the special 'Best FIFA Award' for the former Santos and Brazil legend and upon receiving the award she then thanked FIFA for the tribute.

The FIFA Fifpro men's world XI was also named and it included Real Madrid's goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois while the back three consisted of Achraf Hakimi(PSG), Virgil van Dijk(Liverpool) and Joao Cancelo(Bayern Munich) 

Kevin De Bruyne(Manchester City), Luka Modric(Real Madrid) and Casemiro(Manchester United) along with Lionel Messi(PSG), Erling Haaland(Manchester City), Karim Benzema(Real Madrid) and Kylian Mbappe(PSG) were entrusted with the attacking roles of the world XI team.
