Bheki Cele is visiting the Sophiatown Police Station this morning to gain clarity on the rising violence in the Westbury area. The violence came to light on Friday and has since resulted in two deaths and 11 injuries.

According to a statement from the South African Police Service (SAPS), the purpose of the meeting is to “establish the effectiveness of the operational response to the violence.”

It is alleged that the recent violence erupted after a gang kingpin was killed last week and has led to more shootings since.

Residents of Westbury are currently fearful, with some teenagers having also fallen victim to being shot. Many are hoping for an urgent solution by the police, with some calling for the arrest of gang members.

The minister is accompanied by the Acting National Commissioner, Lieutenant General, Tebello Mosikili, and they are both being briefed on the state of crime and violence in the region.
