Nedbank Cup on the horizon

By Neo Poho

This week we will see the DSTV Premiership take a pause as the 2023 campaign of the Nedbank Cup commences on Tuesday the 7th of February.

The Nedbank Cup which sees the winner of the competition take home a mammoth R7 million is the last domestic trophy of the season before the league ends in May 2023.

32 teams from the DSTV Premiership, Motsepe Foundation Championship and the ABC Motsepe League combined are set to compete against each other with the hope of succeeding and being crowned the champions in May.

The Nedbank Cup is also another platform where players, especially those in the lower leagues get to showcase their talent and potentially attract teams in the top-flight football.

With some clashes being what we call a David vs Goliath encounter, we remember the 24-0 drubbing of Mamelodi Sundowns to Powerlines FC while also reflecting on the Pirates 4-1 loss to Maluti FET College and of course the famous TS Galaxy 1-0 triumph over Kaizer Chiefs in the 2019 final.

With the winner of the tournament also gaining access to the CAF Confederations Cup next season, it will be interesting to see which team will go all the way in a bid to represent South Africa in continental football.

Defending Champions Mamelodi Sundowns will begin their Nedbank Cup campaign against Richards Bay at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday night.

With fixtures coming in thick and fast for the Brazillians, we are more likely to see coach Rhulani Mokwena rotate the squad for the Nedbank Cup encounter with the likes of veteran goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene expected to start along with players like Lesedi Kapinga, Bradley Ralani and Sphelele Mkhulise just to name a few.

Meanwhile Richards Bay who have done incredibly well in their DSTV Premiership debut so far will look to cause an upset against a Mamelodi Sundowns side that is currently unstoppable.

The two sides have met before in the last 32 of the same competition last year and Sundowns comfortably won that encounter 4-0 with two goals in either half as Surprise Ralani and Rushine De Reuck scored in the first half while Pavol Safranko and Peter Shalulile scored in the second 45 minutes.

In another encounter on Tuesday evening, Marumo Gallants will welcome Magesi FC at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
