Soweto Giants Orlando Pirates have won their third match in a row for the first time this season in the DSTV Premiership after defeating Marumo Gallants 2-0 on Saturday night.

At a noisy Royal Bafokeng stadium Pirates scored in either half of the game as Monnapule Saleng broke the deadlock in the 36th minute of the match.

With the Buccaneer's going to halftime in the lead, it was evident that the second half would be exciting and full of chances from both sides.

Gallants started the second half keen to get a goal back as for the first time in the match Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine was tested but he made a couple of good saves to keep his side in the lead.

Pirates continued to use their pace on the flanks in a bid to get the second goal and the pressure finally paid off as Bandile Shandu was fouled in the box.

Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo took the responsibility upon his shoulder and converted a beautiful penalty against his former team.

The second goal by Pirates looked to have extinguished the threat Gallants were trying for build in the second half.

The victory also means that Pirates will move ever so close to the second spot on the log with only two points separating them from second place Richards Bay FC.

Man of the match Nkosinathi Sibisi stated that he is happy that the team managed to keep a clean sheet and the brotherhood within the team is the reason why the performance was exceptional.

Pirates coach Jose Riviero commended the midfield of the team that they worked really hard and a couple of players in the middle of the park were focused and disciplined against a very tough Gallants side.

Pirates next face log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns on the 4th of February 2023 at the Orlando Stadium.

Meanwhile Marumo Gallants have now gone eight games without a victory still rooted at the bottom of the log standings with 15 points.

Coach Dan Malesela lamented that he was disappointed with the way his side played because they conceded goals that could have been avoided and defended better.

They will next host Sekhukhune United at the Royal Bafokeng stadium on the 4th of February 2023.
