#PlayOfTheWeek

By @fentselite_

It’s been another week of great human spirit and triumph in the world of sport and as would be expected, we were not short of magic.

We saw Cristiano Ronaldo break yet another world record and be awarded the Guinness world record for most international goals scored ever! Cr7, as he’s known by millions of sporting fans across the world, made headlines last week when he signed a new contract that will see him return to Manchester United. This week the man decided to grab headlines again when Portugal played Ireland in a World Cup qualifier match in his hometown, so the stage was set for a great spectacle.

Ronaldo scored a brace after missing a penalty to give Portugal a 2-1 win over the Irish and hit 112 international goals for Portugal, a world record! He may have gotten a yellow card for his shirtless celebration, but he won’t mind much about that. His nemessi’s finally made his first appearance for a football club other than Barcelona! Leo Messi came on in the second half to replace Brazils’ Neymar when PSG played Reims in Ligue 1 and satisfied the many appetites of world football fans to see the little magician play football again, this time for PSG in Paris.

Crossing over to the other side of the “road” we saw the young Max Verstappen continue his leadership in the F1 race as he claimed pole position in the Dutch F1 and go on to finish ahead of Mercedes Benz duo of Lewis Hamilton and Valterri Bottas! This was his first win in the Netherlands, and it keeps the 23-year-old Red Bull Racing king in the number one position.

But when it comes to this week’s Play of the Week we are coming back home. Last week he broke the world record in the long jump and won many international hearts in the Paralympics in Tokyo! As if that wasn’t enough greatness, 19-year-old Ntando Mahlangu from KwaMhalnga in Mpumalanga added yet another gold star to his performances.

The champion Paralympian bagged his second gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics this weekend when he took position one in the 200m in the T61 category.

“I’m so happy with the gold medals, I think that was the dream coming here and now that dream has become reality in the end” he said speaking to SASCOC media team in Japan.

His wins also mean he bags about R 1 million in cash, as he collects R450k per gold medal from the South African Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Minister, Mr Nathi Mthethtwa. He then gets R 180k for breaking the world record while R 240k will go to his coach.

Bafana Bafana may have played to a goalless draw against Zimbabwe in their first leg this weekend but there is enough to celebrate for South Africans thanks to Ntando’s efforts!

We celebrate you young Hero! Here’s to many more gold medals and broken records!
