Sundowns dismantle Al Ahly in Pretoria

Mamelodi Sundowns were too perfect for Al Ahly as the Pretoria based side won 5-2 in the CAF Champions League group B match at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

At a fully packed Loftus Versfeld that was covered in yellow, Sundowns broke the deadlock as early as the 4th minute when Marcelo Allende capitalised on some poor defending from Al Ahly at the back to put the home side in the lead.

Allende's goal was followed by Themba Zwane's goal in the 24th minute as Sundowns started to show their intentions in the game, leaving Al Ahly with no room to settle in the encounter.

Just as it seemed like the two sides would head into halftime with the score on 2-0, Bafana Bafana international Teboho Moloi produced a moment of brilliance in the 40th minute as he scored a thunder of a goal from outside the penalty box of Al Ahly to set the crowd into a frenzy heading into halftime.

Al Ahly's consolation goal in the first half was scored in the 13th minute after Mohamed Sherif capitalised on some mistake between Ronwen Williams and his defenders at the back.

An exciting second half was surely imminent however, Sundowns started really slow after the break with Al Ahly gaining confidence and gradually making their way back to the clash.

Percy Tau would come back to haunt his former club as the Al Ahly's midfielder scored a beautiful solo goal in the 61st minute of the match to make matters tense heading into the last 20 minutes with the score on 3-2.

With the Sundowns crowd in their full voices, the Brazilians came back to the encounter when Neo Maema penetrated through the defence of Al Ahly to set up Peter Shalulile who rattled the back of the net for Sundowns' fourth goal.

Shalulile was at it again in the 88th minute to put the game beyond doubt for the visiting side, the Namibian striker's goal sealed the five star performance for Rhulani Mokwena's side much to the delight of Sundowns' chairman Tlhopane Motsepe who was watching from the grandstands.

The win saw Sundowns bounce back to winning ways with Stellenbosch FC having held them to a 1-1 draw last weekend in the DSTV Premiership.

Furthermore Masandawana climbed to the top of the Champions League Group B standings, a point above second-placed Al Hilal Omdurman of Sudan.

Sundowns now just need just a point from the last two matches to secure their spot in the knockout phase of Africa's most prestigious club football tournament.
