The Nedbank Cup dream continues for Dondol Stars

ABC Motsepe League side Dondol Stars continued their giant killing escapades as they defeated DSTV Premiership outfit AmaZulu in the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.

Dondolo Stars eliminated AmaZulu 5-4 on penalties after the two sides played out to a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes.

AmaZulu's Gabadihno Mhango was the only player from the KZN side that missed his penalty while Dondol Stars converted all their penalties with ease to seal the victory.

Before that, AmaZulu had broken the deadlock through Henrick Ekstein in the 54th minute of the encounter to put Usuthu in the lead in a match where the Durban-based side should have wrapped up the tie in the first half however, that wasn't to be as AmaZulu squandered all their opportunities.

The Pretoria-based side was then allowed back into the encounter when Revaldo Fox scored during a goalmouth scramble after a corner kick by the third-tier side.

Just like in the first half, the two teams continued to create chances but neither could find the winner in regulation time, the teams still couldn't be separated during extra time.

AmaZulu were then reduced to 10 man as Keagan Buchanan was given a red card with six minutes remaining for fouling a Dondol player however, it was a matter of too little too late for the amateur side to use the numerical advantage.

Penalties followed and the rest was history as Dondol Stars progressed to the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup much to the excitement of the fans who traveled from Pretoria to Johannesburg after the encounter was moved from the TUT Stadium to FNB Stadium amid ongoing protests at the University.

Dondol Stars join Mamelodi Sundowns in the last 8 of the competition with more Nedbank Cup last 16 action expected during the weekend.
