The Transfer Window As It Happened

By Neo Poho

In a busy day for South African football, Orlando Pirates' latest signee Makhehlene Makhaula was the big talking point as the 33 year-old joined the Buccaneers from AmaZulu on the last day of the transfer window.

The former AmaZulu captain joins Orlando Pirates after a very impressive spell with the Durban based side making 65 appearances in the league from the 2020/21 season till date.

With a already packed midfield, lets see what Makhaula brings to the table as Jose Riviero and his technical team will have a lot of thinking to do in finding the perfect combination for the midfielders.

A Healthy Competition.

With the addition of Makhaula, we are going to see a very healthy competition in the middle of the park for Orlando Pirates who already have Ben Motshwari, Miguel Timm, Goodman Mosele and Thabang Monare.

Makhaula might also be the perfect replacement for Monare whose contract is coming to an end at the end of the season should the club decide to not renew it.

Recently we have seen Timm and Monare become the regular combination for Jose Riviero's side while Mosele and Motshwari would come on as substitutes.

Now that the competition has been increased will Timm and Monare consolidate their spots? or will the new man already breakthrough the starting XI?

Strength and Physicality.

The 33-year old Makhaula has incredible strength and endurance on and off the ball, he is a good holder of the ball and with Pirates looking to breakthrough through the opposition teams using the flanks, Makhaula might just be the perfect fit to hold the ball and offload to the wingers.

His physical presence in the box is also a force to be reckoned with as he will always be present in the opposition team' box during corner kicks and free kicks although his height is not befitting as he is slightly shorter.

Experience and Leadership qualities.

The 33 year old brings about experience in the Orlando Pirates camp, having played for Free State Stars, Highlands Park and most recently AmaZulu, Makhaula will be instrumental in helping Pirates succeed and potentially win the Nedbank Cup.

His leadership qualities will also prove to be crucial especially in continental football should Pirates finish second and qualify for the CAF Champions League next season.

As Pirates fans are excited about the arrival of Makhaula, it will be interesting to see if he will make his debut for the Soweto giants when they lock horns with Mamelodi Sundowns at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile the addition of Cameroon's Souaibou Marou to the Buccaneers has seen Orlando Pirates offload Zakhele Lepasa to SuperSport United.

Lepasa joins SuperSport United on loan until the end of the season hoping to get some game time and find his scoring form again.

Upon arrival Lepasa expressed his excitement at joining Matsatsantsa A Pitori where he will be reunited with Siphesihle Ndlovu who also joined SuperSport on loan from Orlando Pirates last year.

"I am very excited to be here and I am hoping to add value in the team especially upfront, I can't wait to meet the fans this weekend when we play against Cape Town City," Lepasa said.

With Lepasa now in the mix alongside Bradley Grobler, Grant Margeman, Iqraam Rayners  and Mamour Niang, will we see Thamsanqa Gabuza leave the Pretoria based outfit at the end of the season ?

It was also interesting to see former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi sign for Swallows FC on a six months deal.

I believe this is what the 36 year old needed if anything is to go by for him in a bid to revive his career.

Akpeyi is also the right man for a wounded Swallows side that needs victories but also clean sheets to sustain the victories.

I believe he will also be given his Swallows debut when the Dube Birds take on Richards Bay on Friday night at the Dobsonville Stadium.
