Dr Murunwa Makwarela will remain as the Executive Mayor of Tshwane. This following his removal as PR Councillor, two days ago after allegations of being insolvent since 2016.

Dr. Murunwa Makwarela was reinstated as Tshwane Mayor today after he provided a letter of solvency to the municipality's City Manager, Johan Mettler.

Makwarela was previously disqualified by the Independent Electoral Commission after he was flagged for being an un-rehabilitated insolvent.

Makwarela, a Congress of the People (COPE) member was elected into office last week via a secret ballot, which saw him win against the DA’s Cilliers Brink.

Makwarela was elected the city Mayor on Thursday last week, following the sudden resignation of the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Randall Williams three weeks ago.

Following Makwarela’s election, his previous position of Speaker of the Council became vacant, which saw the Council meet for a sitting yesterday to elect a new Speaker.

However, the vote did not happen due to the Council not meeting the quorum as a result of the DA and its coalition deciding not to show up to the Council.

The DA’s dissatisfaction comes amid the party's alleging that Makwarela was not competent for the job.

Following the executive mayor had instructed his legal team to challenge his disqualification from holding the position, where he later provided a letter proving his rehabilitation.

The Joburg Post has since reached out to the DA, who were the forerunners in his disqualification, but has since been unsuccessful.
