Umalusi has made the pronouncement of the 2022 National results ahead of the announcement of the Matric Results by the Minister of Basic Education, this week. The Quality Council for General and Further Education and Training, further expressed that the Matric Results will be released as planned on 19 January 2023.

Following rumours circulating over social media, of Umalusi requesting an extension, the Council has expressed that there will be no need for an extension adding that the relevant stakeholders have unanimously agreed on 19 January being the release date.

Speaking on the late release of results in comparison to prior years, the CEO of Umalusi, Dr. Mafu Rakometsi expressed that Covid-19, as well as the late start of the 2022 academic year, are some contributing factors to this.

Rakometsi further spoke on the irregularities discovered during the examinations, including the ringing of cellphones, possible assistance by invigilators, and inconsistency in handwriting. He added that cheating was a matter of great concern for the Council, with its prominence seemingly growing.

According to the CEO, candidates caught cheating or were implicated thereof, would have their results withheld until cleared.

He further pleaded with candidates writing in 2023 and invigilators to avoid cheating in any way possible.

Meanwhile, Umalusi's chairperson, Professor Yunus Ballim condemned what he described as the "repeated attacks of education facilities and staff", pleading with the public to speak out against this.

When speaking on the 2022 National Senior Certificate (NSC) Examinations, Ballim expressed that 921 879 candidates were administered by the Department of Basic Education. Of these, 18 percent were part-time candidates.

The NSC examinations administered by the IEB, saw 13 536 candidates writing the examinations.

Speaking on the errors in the Mathematics Paper 2 examination, Ballim expressed that Umalusi conducted an investigation as to how the issue went undetected, of which it was revealed that it occurred in the last step of internal and external moderation as well as the language editing and typesetting process.

With the quality of the results having been assured by Umalusi, the official countdown to the Matric Results begins.

The NSC Matric Results will be announced by the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga on 19 January 2023 in Fairland, Randburg.
