We Love Africa: @tstmkrsafrica

By Joburg Post

We plug breathtaking Instagram pages that share our values; changing the Africa narrative, shed light on Africa’s beauty & potential, promote black beauty, highlight black excellence and tell the stories of ALL THINGS AFRICA.

This week we’re crushing on @tstmkrsafrica

• good morning • I’m not sure if everyone is paying attention to the moment that is @arisefashionweek right now. It isn’t just the designers, it’s the African connectivity that is manifesting and long overdue. Peep @manthe.ribane shot by @trevor_stuurman and styled by the GOAT herself Mama Nike at @nikeartgallery. When I started this company four years ago South Africans were still saying they were going to “Africa” when they were traveling the continent outside of their own borders. Now you’re hearing Gqom on the radio in Lagos, South African artists traveling to Ghana for Chale Wote, and people are collaborating and building with each other across the continent. It’s time. #travelafrica 🙏🏾

• the treasure is you • @mallo.obasi in Dakar, Senegal

• stand tall in your greatness • @yonas_tadesse_ in the Afar region of Ethiopia

• to all the ladies in the place with style and grace • We were doing @mukasechic’s street food crawl in Osu (peep it on TastemakersAfrica.com) and saw this stunning woman selling bananas just before we got to the bofrot stand. My belly full of fufu gave me just enough courage to ask to take her photo. Initially she couldn’t be bothered. A few banana purchases later and a conversation led to this capture. Today is Labour Day in Ghana and I was reminded of this woman’s hustle and commitment to her work over my seemingly useless request to take a photo (a privilege when you think about it). Representation and consent are slippery slopes when you travel to places where people’s rights are stripped on a daily. With “local” shots all the vogue on the gram, how do you balance people’s individual dignity with your interest in capturing the photos? Our principle is always ask and then get their contact to share the photo when possible. What’s yours?

• counting down • In just over a month we’re heading back to Senegal, loading up the mood as we speak with inspo from @mamytall in Dakar. If you are a last minute traveler and want a quick escape there are two more spots left on our trip! DM us for info and come through :)

• a fighters stance • Spent today in Jamestown, the oldest neighborhood in Accra, literally chilling with the people. Had the chance to watch these young fighters, largely kids who were on the street but their fellow Ghanaians took them in and ignited their spirits with a new tool and tons of support. Impact is impact seen or unseen, the work that changes someone’s world is literally world changing. There are amazing things happening here in Ghana. If you’re traveling for the Year of Return make sure you go beyond the obvious and tap into this magic. ____________________ You can learn more about boxing in Jamestown by booking an experience on tastemakersafrica.com ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ TASTEMAKERS AFRICA is an online platform that connects you to experiences hosted and created by local insiders in Accra, Cape Town, and Johannesburg.
