President Cyril Ramaphosa continued with his testimony today at the Zondo commission into state capture. Ramaphosa was asked to explain lapses in state security over recent years, including a recent stand-off between the Investigating Directorate (ID) . Ramaphosa also addressed the rumors surrounding the removal of acting director-general Loyiso Jafta. The president said there was no agenda behind his removal and proper procedures.

“With Jafta, he was an acting director-general and his acting period had been renewed a number of times – to a point where there was some regulation which suggests that you cannot keep renewing the acting role. You, therefore, needed to change that and bring in another acting person or bring in something else,” explains the President.

Ramaphosa also revealed that he was in the dark about some developments, including the suspension of three Eskom executives, saying that he largely learned of the extent of state capture from the media, civil society and Chapter 9 institutions.

Ramaphosa also told the commission that it was not necessarily unusual that Gigaba was promoted from being a deputy Home Affairs minister to being appointed Minister of Public Enterprises.

"The affiliated plans of the president and the assessments that he makes of the people who served with him or those that he would like to serve him, assesses either their capability or assesses the work ethic they have and appoints them."
