What's Trending : Suspension of SABC retrenchment process extended to end December

The SABC announced that it will be retrenching 400 employees . In a statement, the state broadcaster said it will be implementing Section 189 of the Labour Relations Act. Following this the employees took to the streets to picket during their lunch hour in SABC offices across the country. After intensified pressure from labour unions as well as the employees. On Friday the broadcaster's acting spokesperson Mmoni Seapolelo had initially announced that they are holding off on S189 process for a period of 7 days in an attempt to allow all stakeholders to engage and explore further options in an effort to ensure the financial sustainability of the SABC. Seapolelo said SABC is committed to meaningfully engaging with all its stakeholders as it continues to make the corporation financially sustainable in order to fulfil its public mandate.
In a statement on Tuesday, the SABC Board have announced that they have extended the suspension of the S189 process until the end of December, following the management's engagement with organised labour as well as other stake holders. They have decided to use this time to worked with all the participating parties, to further review the proposed structures with intent to ensure that they are favorable and will continue to enable them to achieve the public interest.
