ActionSA files motions of no-confidence against Speaker and Mayor of Johannesburg

ActionSA has come guns blazing, criticising the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Thapelo Amad, and Speaker of Council, Colleen Makhubele. This comes following a series of events that have led the party to announce its intentions to remove the two councillors from their positions.

Time seems to be ticking for Joburg Mayor, Thapelo Amad who has been described by ActionSA as “ill-equipped” and a “puppet mayor”, as well as Speaker of Council, Colleen Makhubele.

This comes following a television interview that saw Amad make controversial remarks about an alleged R9.5-billion loan that was offered to the City of Joburg.

Amad later backtracked on this statement, but the damage already seemed to be done, with opposition members of the council labelling it as “criminal”, citing that they have no knowledge of such a loan.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of Council, Colleen Makhubele is also facing criticism following her failure to attend the last Council illness and allegedly forging a sick note.

Makhubele, who has now been dubbed as a  ‘resident of Tshwane’, was seen attending the Tshwane Council sitting the same day she called in sick, to attend to what ActionSA describes as “attending to internal COPE party squabbles”.

Following this series of events, ActionSA filed a motion of no-confidence against the mayor and Speaker, in a bid to end what it has described as “Joburg Embarrassment”.

“Since Amad’s election, service delivery in Johannesburg has rapidly deteriorated with heaps of rubbish pilling our city’s streets”- Funzi Ngobeni (ActionSA Gauteng Chairperson)

Meanwhile, it is alleged that the ANC-led coalition is looking quite shaky, with the possibility of the Patriotic Alliance voting alongside ActionSA and the DA-led coalition in the next council sitting, quite high.

With ActionSA having vowed to engage with all other parties in the Council to “ensure that the ANC and EFF are removed from exerting any further control on Johannesburg”, one will wait in anticipation to see the fate of the city going forward.

The motions of no confidence have already been filed and will serve at the next council meeting on 25 April 2023.
