ANC-EFF led coalition succeed in giving Tania Campbell the boot

Time is officially up for the Democratic Alliance (DA)’s Tania Campbell. This is as Campbell was ousted as the Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni this afternoon via a motion of no-confidence that was tabled against her by opposition parties.

Members of the African National Congress (ANC) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)-led coalition can now celebrate after the successful attempt at removing the DA's Tania Campbell from the mayoral office.

This was the second attempt at removing Campbell after the ANC tabled a motion of no-confidence against her in October last year. Following the collapse of party coalitions and strategy among the ANC and EFF, this saw Campbell assume the position for much longer than what opposition parties would have wanted.

Despite this last minute mishap, the ANC-led coalition still managed to garner enough votes to remove Campbell, but failed to vote its preferred candidate, Jongizizwe Dlabathi into the position candidate into power due to the EFF abstaining from the mayoral election. This saw Campbell reinstated as mayor, where she occupied the position for 16 months.

Today's vote was different though, with all coalition  partners voting in accordance.126 councilors voted in favour of the motion of no confidence against Campbell, whilst 91 voted against.

Prior to the vote today, many opposition parties expressed how Campbell has failed to deliver services to the people of Ekurhuleni during her time as the mayor of the city, adding that she was not fit to hold office.

With Campbell no longer occupying the seat, the next order of business will see Councillors put forward candidates for the position of Executive Mayor, where a vote will then take place.

Currently, two candidates are running for the position: the ousted mayor, Tania Campbell and the African Independent Congress (AIC) councillor, Sivuyile Ngodwana.

Ngodwana, whose party only has three seats, is being backed by the ANC, whilst the EFF are also set to vote for him, adding that they are "not voting for the ANC, but are voting with Sivuyile [Ngodwana]".

Will Ekurhuleni be yet another City in the province to have an Executive Mayor from a minority party, or is it not game over yet for Cllr Tania Campbell?

This is a developing story, more updates to follow.
