ANC holds First NEC Lekgotla of 2023

The ANC is holding its first NEC Lekgotla of the year with its newly elected National Executive Committee(NEC). The Lekgotla, which is taking place over two days, began on 29 January 2023 and forms a part of the series of NEC meetings that are taking place.

Following the election of the ANC NEC in December last year, the party has built on the mandate of Conference, and declared 2023 to be ‘The Year of Decisive Action to Advance the People’s Interests and Renew our Movement’ 

Today saw the party President, Cyril Ramaphosa give his opening remarks to officially start the Lekgotla.

Speaking to those gathered, Ramaphosa spoke on the purpose of the Lekgotla of which he expressed that it is to bring together the “political leadership and senior government officials to assess the performance of the ANC-led government against our policies and targets”.

He further expressed that its primary aim m is to track implementation of previous Makgotla decisions, and develop and discuss plans of action and strategies to advance the interests of the people. 

Among the priorities identified for 2023 as brought about in the January 8th Statement include:
  • Undertaking specific initiatives and programmes to deepen and broaden the renewal of the ANC
  • Accelerating the work underway to end load-shedding.
  • Mobilising social partners to increase employment and investment and deepen empowerment and transformation.
  • Improving basic service delivery and maintenance of infrastructure.
  •  Strengthening the fight against crime and corruption.

The President spoke of the current energy crisis, gender-based violence and the increase of corruption, as well as the party’s plans to combat these issues.

Following Ramaphosa’s address, the Committee commenced with plenary discussions behind closed doors, whilst the party Secretary General, Fikile Mbalula as well as the Spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu, spoke to the media.

Speaking on load shedding, Mbalula expressed the party’s strategic goal to end load shedding by the end of of the year.

The Lekgotla is taking place on 29-30 January 2023.
