The IEC has revealed that people who may need a special vote for the upcoming elections were expected to make their applications before May 2024.

The commission gave an update on its state of readiness on Monday the 26th of February 2024 outlining important dates ahead of the polls.

It said that this provision was made for people who may be confined and could not reach voting stations.

The IEC is urging the public to ensure that they apply for special votes for people such as the elderly, who require a visit to their home to cast their vote.

Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said that the applications should be submitted by the 3rd of May 2024.

"Home visits and voting station-based special votes will happen on two days, 27 and 28 May 2024 and those who will be outside their voting district, including people who will be out of the country on election day, they are required to alert the commission in writing,” Mamabolo said.

Meanwhile, the IEC has also alluded that it has been allocated R2.3 billion for the elections, but warned of the financial implications of amendments to the Electoral Act.

IEC chief financial officer Andile Dawn Mbatha told Parliament on Tuesday the 27th of February 2024 that amendments to the Act would lead to a lengthy ballot paper and the need to employ more people to count ballot papers and other costs related to the elections.

IEC deputy Chief Electoral Officer Masego Sheburi also said they have consulted with political parties on the election timetable.
