"Educor Colleges face Deregistration due to Dysfunction" - Minister Blade Nzimande

Minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande, has described Educor colleges as completely dysfunctional following numerous complaints from students and workers alike, both publicly and privately.

Educor owns several institutions across the country, including Damelin, City Varsity, Intec Lyceum, and Icesa City Campus colleges.

Nzimande stated that the complaints received about these colleges encompass a range of issues, including misrepresentation of student numbers, inadequate teaching methods, administrative shortcomings, allegations of corruption, and delayed staff payments.

During a press conference on Tuesday the 26th of March 2024, Nzimande announced the cancellation of the registrations of all aforementioned colleges.

This decision was made as the colleges failed to submit their annual financial statements for the years 2021 and 2022, demonstrating non-compliance with the law.

"These cancellations were carried out in accordance with the 2016 Regulations for the Registration of Private Higher Education Institutions and the applicable sections of the Higher Education Act  as the Educor institutions have not provided proof of financial viability, such as annual financial statements and tax clearance certificates," Nzimande said.

The affected institutions had until September 26, 2023, to lodge an appeal with the minister, but they requested an extension until February 28, 2024 and they are now seeking a further extension.

Nzimande highlighted that over 13,000 students will be impacted by the deregistration of these colleges.

However, the institutions will continue operating until December of this year to facilitate the phasing out of students from their registers.

Notably, the cancellation of City Varsity's registration will happen immediately.
