ActionSA's National Chairperson, Michael Beaumont has revealed that his party as well as coalition parties in the City of Johannesburg feel snubbed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) following the party's announcement of Dr Mpho Phalatse as its preferred candidate for the mayoral position.

In a statement, Beaumont confirmed that ActionSA has been in talks with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP),  FF Plus (FF+), African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) and the United Independent Movement (UIM) in it has described as to "determine the viability of rallying around a Mayoral Candidate that can stabilise governance for the benefit of all residents in Johannesburg".

According to Beaumont, the parties unanimously agreed that ActionSA's Johannesburg Caucus Leader Funzi Ngobeni will stand as their preferred candidate, adding that ActionSA wrote to the DA to appeal with them to meet with them and garner its support behind Ngobeni, who according to his party, is likely to receive a majority vote count with the the DA's support.

"The case was made for the fact that Ngobeni could achieve a majority in council with the support of the DA, something that Phalatse cannot achieve (even with our collective support) because of the breakdown of relationships between the DA and other parties in council."- Michael Beaumont, ActionSA National Chairperson

Beaumont expressed that the DA declined its invitation to meet, and has chosen to maintain its stance to nominate Phalatse once more.

Meanwhile, the City of Joburg Council is set to meet once again for a sitting following the abrupt resignation of former mayor of the city, Thapelo Amad last week.

Amad, who was facing a motion of no-confidence resigned last week amid mounting pressure from opposition parties from the city. With Amad having been backed by the ANC-led coalition, the coalition has not yet announced its preferred candidate ahead of the Council sitting today, however, one sees that a candidate from a minority party could be put forward once again.

Both coalitions in the city seemingly hanging on a thread ahead of today's proceedings. One will have to watch to see if the City of Johannesburg will have a mayor by the end of the day.

This is a developing story, more updates to follow.
