Joburg Council cancels today's planned sitting amid Thapelo Amad's resignation

The City of Johannesburg will have to wait yet another week before receiving another mayor. This is as Al Jama-ah's Thapelo Amad resigned yesterday on the eve of what was meant to be a motion of no-confidence tabled against him and the city's Speaker, Colleen Makhubele.

Following the resignation of Thapelo Amad from the position of mayor, the Council sitting that was planned for today was cancelled, with another sitting set to take place on 2 May 2023 to elect a new mayor.

With a new vacant position available, it seems as though despite their similarities in prior views (ie. the removal of Thapelo Amad), the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Patriotic Alliance (PA) are not seeing each other eye to eye once again.

This as the DA-led coalition plans to reclaim the city, with ActionSA seemingly lobbying for the PA.

Despite this, the DA does not seem keen on this idea, constantly reiterating that it cannot work alongside PA to achieve this, even citing the PA's alleged intentions to distance themselves from the ANC and their return afterwards.

The PA stood alongside the ANC yesterday where the resignation of Amad was announced with the party leader, Gayton McKenzie alleging that he was approached by the leader of ActionSA, Herman Mashaba to vote with the party, if the motion against Amad went through.

McKenzie has since criticised DA, painting the party as a dictator that does not back its coalition partners.

It is still unclear who the candidate representing the ANC-led coalition will be, but the DA has since expressed that it will be backing Phalatse once again.
