The City of Joburg is officially mayor-less following the announcement of Thapelo Amad's resignation from the role yesterday. Amad, an Al Jama-ah member had been facing mounting pressure from opposition parties, with a motion of no-confidence against him on the table.

After just four months in office, Thapelo Amad has decided that he cannot handle the heat and has now stepped out of the kitchen.

The Al Jama-ah member of Council in the City resigned yesterday, a day ahead of a Council sitting that would've seen a motion of no-confidence against him.

Speaking at a media briefing held alongside coalition members, ANC chairperson in Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi, announced the resignation of Amad, adding that the government of local unity still remains united in defence against the motions of no-confidence to be tabled today.

Amad, became the mayor of the City in January this year after contesting against the DA’s candidate and ousted mayor, Dr Mpho Phalatse and ActionSA’s Funzi Ngobeni.

The former mayor has since emphasised that his resignation has got nothing to do with the pressure as a result of the infamous loan issue as well as the views of the public.

The loan in question was mentioned during a television interview he had where he alleged that R9.5 billion was offered as a loan to the city by a private company.

Amad further withdrew these views, but the damage was already done, with oposition parties calling for his head.

Meanwhile, ActionSA and the DA have welcomed Amad's resignation referring to it as overdue and emphasising their dissatisfaction with how he ran the city.
