The DA’s still mute over Joburg’s newly elected mayor’s fate

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg seems relatively mute following it's damning allegations against the newly elected mayor of the city, Kabelo Gwamanda.

Following allegations made by former mayor and DA caucus leader, Dr Mpho Phalatse, that Gwamanda has been involved in a Ponzi scheme, not much has been done by the party to bring forth evidence.

Kabelo Gwamanda was elected as the mayor of Johannesburg last week, after getting an outright majority vote against the DA’s Mpho Phalatse and ActionSA’s Funzi Ngobeni.

Gwamanda, a member of Al Jama-ah, just like his predecessor, Thapelo Amad was given 48 hours from last week to confess to this allegation.

Meanwhile, the Joburg Post has reached out to the DA in the city, to hear whether the party has indeed taken the matter to the South African Police Service as it said it would, but have since received little information.

Despite this, Al Jama-ah has disputed this claim, with its leader Ganief Hendricks of being bitter about losing the mayor race, adding that Gwamanda has been vetted.

This is a developing story, more updates to follow.
