Tshwane Council to attempt to elect a new mayor once again

The Tshwane Council is today, expected to try again at electing a new mayor. This is as the Tshwane Council was left in disarray on Friday last week, following hours of caucus breaks and lack of decorum among Councillors, which saw the only thing brought forward on the agenda-the vote for a new mayor, postponed.

Following the Tshwane Council's attempt to elect a new Executive Mayor of the City last week, the Council will try once again in what will be the second special Council sitting called in less than a week by the newly elected Speaker, Mncedi Ndzwanana.

Last week's sitting saw the announcement of the termination of two ActionSA members membership from the party for allegedly voting with the opposition in the mayoral race between the DA’s Cilliers Brink and COPE’s Dr Murunwa Makwarela

The termination of their membership comes following the expulsion of another Councillor within the party, Nkele Molapo earlier that week for allegedly leaking confidential party information to her spouse.

With ActionSA being down by three Councillors, this left the DA-led coalition with fewer seats which would result in the results of the Mayoral race having a much smaller margin. This subsequently saw the DA query this issue among others, such as the validity of some members.

The party called for such information to be verified legally and for the sitting to be reconvened to today to give the Speaker enough time to seek legal advice.

Another seat was also left vacant from COPE, following a letter issued by the City of Johannesburg Speaker, Colleen Makhubele which expressed the suspension of  Thabang Sefanyetso from the party and removal as a Councillor in Tshwane.

COPE seemed to be gathering controversy, with one of its new Councillors who replaced the embattled Dr. Murunwa Makwarela, being alleged to have two different ID numbers, which saw the DA bring it to the Speaker's attention as something that ought to be looked into.

With the various caucus breaks, no nominations for the position of Executive Mayor were made, with the only known candidate at the moment being the DA's Cilliers Brink.

Members of the ANC in the Tshwane Council have since denied whether they have a candidate of their own.

The Council is set to meet once again today, in what will possibly be its last chance to elect a mayor. This is as the City has been given until the end of March to pass the Adjustment Budget.

Failing to do so could see the City placed under administration.

This is a developing story. More updates to follow.
