Africa’s Greatest Football Clubs: Saint George Football Club

By Joburg Post

In a history spanning close to 90 years, St. George are comfortably one of the biggest, if not the absolute best club in Ethiopia. They have won the Ethiopian Premier League 27 times since 1950.

History
: According to their club website, the club was formed sometime around 1928; “If questions like when, where and by who were raised then there are few supporting documents to establish some kind of accuracy. Documents of course are verifying facts. The club in general was founded at the Arada neighbourhood in December 1928 with the united effort of the area residents with such people like Mr. Ayale Atnaf and George dukes. Certainly when mentioning the founders, it always needed to have the famed Mr. Yidnekachew’s name along with others; he joined the club after two month of its existence.” The club quickly became the symbol of Ethiopian nationalism and a representation of the country's quest for freedom. After the Italians were defeated at the back of the 1935 invasion of Ethiopia, St. George briefly turned into a pictogram of identity for many Ethiopians. As there weren't other Ethiopian clubs, it had been playing against foreign clubs. In 1947, the country's national league kicked off with three teams; St. George, Mechale and Ke'ay Bahir. The club remained within the league for twenty-five years before the Derg reorganized the football leagues. Since 1999, fee-paying supporters have owned St. George. In November 2007, the club had finished raising funds and would begin construction of a new stadium. Budgeted at 312 million Birr, 80% of the cost would be covered by Sheik Mohammed Al Amoudi with the balance to be contributed by the club’s supporters.

Dominance
Throughout its history, the club was the more dominant of the existing sides in Ethiopia. Since the turn of the millennium, the club has won 13 league titles, half of their overall title haul. This impressive record is accompanied by 16 cup titles which include the Ethiopian Cup, the super cup and the Addis Ababa City Cup.

Famous Players
With limited documented history, famous players of the Ethiopian side are made of fairly recent players just like former Orlando Pirates Player Fikru Tefera. Ethiopian captain Adane Girma and Salhadin Said, an experienced striker who has played for Lierse in Belgium and Al Ahli in Egypt still play for the club. Towering goalkeeper Robert Odongkara makes on the best keepers the club has had in its expansive history.
