Bafana Bafana prepare for Andorra in the FIFA Series International Friendly

By Neo Poho

Bafana Bafana aim to capitalise on their impressive performance at the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as they prepare to take on Andorra in the FIFA Series on Thursday the 21st of March 2024 at Stade du 19 Mai 1956 Stadium.

After securing a third-place finish at the 2023 AFCON held in Ivory Coast during January and February, Bafana Bafana under the guidance of coach Hugo Broos, achieved their best Nations Cup performance in almost 25 years.

Looking ahead, the national team's primary objective is to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with qualification matches against Nigeria and Zimbabwe slated for early June 2024.

Broos is also keen on propelling Bafana Bafana up the FIFA Rankings, where they currently stand at 58th globally and 10th in Africa.

Broos acknowledged the challenges posed by the upcoming matches, stating that Andorra is a tough team, a team that will try to be dangerous in transition.

Broos also highlighted the contrasting styles of play between Andorra, their immediate opponents, and Algeria, whom South Africa will face on March 26 2024.

Algeria, ranked fifth in the CAF rankings, also presents a formidable test for South Africa.

Broos emphasised the importance of these friendly matches for the development of new players and maintaining their position in the CAF rankings.

Initially focusing on a youthful and fresh squad post-AFCON, Broos had to adjust his selections due to injuries, leading to the inclusion of experienced players like Siyanda Xulu and Thabang Monare.

Additionally, the late arrival of Mamelodi Sundowns players such as Ronwen Williams, Teboho Mokoena, and Themba Zwane, owing to their club's participation in the Nedbank Cup, posed logistical challenges for the team's preparations.

Having added the likes of Orlando Pirates' Patrick Maswanganyi, Cape Town City's Khanyisa Mayo and Stellenbosch FC's Iqraam Rayners, Broos will be hoping that the new fire-power upfront for Bafana Bafana will do just enough to see them through the two international friendlies.
