Bongiwe Msomi is adamant the Spar Proteas will do well in the Netball World Cup

Ahead of the much anticipated 2023 Netball World Cup, Spar Proteas captain Bongiwe Msomi believes the team has what it takes to do well in the tournament.

Msomi who will be playing in her fourth World Cup tournament this year, has likened the Spar Proteas' situation to that of the Momentum Proteas who went to the final of the T20 Women's World Cup earlier on this year.

“It is a massive motivation because they really did well and everyone was following and supporting them, I think the more we have women in sports stepping up and showing that they have the potential to be the best, it helps all of us and not just a specific sporting code.

So I am confident that we will also do well and potentially go all the way in the tournament since we are also playing on home soil," Msomi said.

The Netball World Cup will begin on the 28th of July and end on the 6th of August 2023 with South Africa’s first pool game being against Wales on the opening day and that will be followed by fixtures against Sri Lanka on the 29th and Commonwealth Games silver medalists, Jamaica, on the 30th.

While there are concerns over the Spar Proteas head coach Norma Plummer only making her way to South Africa from Australia in July, Msomi has reassured the public that preparations are still on-going despite the absence of Plummer.

"Either way, even if she was here, this time is purely for the Telkom Netball League (TNL) which is our highest level of competition in the country so its really just the time for our coaches in the provinces to work with us and if Plummer was here, she wouldn’t be able to work with us.

Nonetheless, we also still communicate with the coach regularly, so we are still on the right track and continuing with the preparations for the World Cup."

The captain also hopes that the enduring legacy of the World Cup in South Africa will be raising the profile of the sport in the country.

"This World cup is going to be such a positive influence in terms of how netball is shaping up in the country and with us being in this space, at this time, I think it’s important that we take it seriously." Msomi added.
