Dstv Premiership resumes: Goals Galore

By Seth Moloi, Football Observer

After a month-long feast on the 2023 AFCON's quality football, fans had to re-adjust and get ready to watch the resumption of the domestic league (Dstv Premiership), the big question was whether the local teams were going to be able to satisfy the huge quality football appetite that had been created by the AFCON tournament or not.

To kick-off this round of fixtures, SuperSport United went up against Stellenbosch FC on Friday night, the fixture did not disappoint as strikers from both teams, Bradley Grobler and Iqraam Rayners each got a goal, maybe sending a message to the national soccer team's coach, although the match finished a goal apiece, it was full of action and could have went either way.

The following day's fixtures also provided lots of excitement between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, the match also ended in a 1-1 draw which is expected from a match between the two giants.

The complexity of the game and the tactics involved makes football to become a low scoring sport, players face numerous challenges, including strong defence, skilled goalkeepers and limited opportunities to create scoring chances.

Ironically, the beauty of football is that the highest scoring matches can turn out to be the most boring, its just not fun to watch a juggernut team destroy a lesser team, where there are no exciting manoeuvres, when one team is grossly outmatched.

The best games are when two evenly-matched teams try to pick each other apart and often for a hard-fought 1-0 victory or even 1-1 draw.

Furthermore a great save in football is just as exciting as a great score, some of the most entertaining games end up at 1-1 where the goalkeepers put on world class perfomances.

The match between Kaizer Chiefs and Royal AM ended goalless however, the match was very exciting with both teams creating numerous chances, its the only match in this round of fixtures that finished goalless.

The last match in this round of matches produced 4 goals with TS Galaxy beating Golden Arrows 3-1.

Which means in one weekend, three matches saw 4 goals scored in each one of those matches and goals are what the fans want to see in a football match.

Football fans watch the match in order to see goalscoring chances being created and goals being scored, no fan will waste his/her time to watch a football match which resembles the Mexican stand-off, a confrontation where no strategy exists that allows any party to achive victory.

The situation where both teams have fear that initiating attack might trigger their own demise.

According to Laura Arroyave, a fitness aficionado, "While scoring is limited in football, it adds to the suspense and excitement of the game, every goal becomes crucial and the anticipation of a potential goal keeps fans engaged until the final whistle."

May the goals keep on comimg in the Dstv Premiership.
