Get to know the Spar Proteas Players: Bongiwe Msomi

By Neo Poho

With only a couple of hours to go before the 2023 Netball World Cup commences at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in Cape Town, South Africa, Spar Proteas captain, Bongiwe Msomi has revealed that the team’s ultimate goal in the 2023 Netball World Cup is a podium finish.

With 158 caps behind her name, Msomi is the Spar Proteas' most capped player.

The playmaker who is equally useful at the centre of the court or on the wing will look to offer her invaluable experience in her fourth World Cup tournament.

Having acquired a National Diploma in Sport Management at the Durban University of Technology, Msomi is the founder of the Bongi Msomi Netball Project, a non-profit company that focuses on raising the profile of netball through skills development, the transfer of knowledge and experiences gained, as well as the holistic development of the coach/player/child and athlete.

The 35-year-old who made her debut in 2011 against Jamaica has alluded that despite the Spar Proteas being in a tough pool, she reckons that they are lucky with not having it easy in the group stages, which might be good in that it will set the standard early for the team.

The Spar Proteas will firstly play against Wales on the 28th of July before facing Sri Lanka and Jamaica on the 29th and 30th of July respectively.

The 16-team global spectacle will take place on African soil for the first time since the competition was established in 1963 and it kicks off on the 28th of July until the 6th of August 2023.
