Get to know the Spar Proteas Players: Karla Pretorius

By Neo Poho

With only a day to go before the 2023 Netball World Cup commences at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in Cape Town, South Africa, Spar Proteas' versatile goal defence and wing defence player, Karla Pretorius is confident South Africa could end up on the podium at the 2023 Netball World Cup.

Pretorius was named the most valuable player at the last Netball World Cup in 2019 where South Africa finished fourth after enjoying an impressive run to the semifinals where they narrowly lost out on a place in the final to Australia.

Born on the 12th of March 1990, Pretorius was born in East London and currently resides in Bloemfontein, Free State.

She made her debut in 2011 against Malawi and has 98 senior caps ahead of the World Cup.

Pretorius is also the Spar Proteas' vice-captain and currently plays for the Sunshine Coast Lightning domestically.

The Dietician by profession is also thrilled with what a home Netball World Cup can do for the sport in South Africa.

“I think it’s great for women in sport that South Africa is hosting the 2023 Netball World Cup because if one has to look at the Cricket World Cup that took place earlier this year, I think it just shows how much it means for women in sport in South Africa," Pretorius said.

The Spar Proteas will firstly play against Wales on the 28th of July before facing Sri Lanka and Jamaica on the 29th and 30th of July respectively.

The 16-team global spectacle will take place on African soil for the first time since the competition was established in 1963 and it kicks off on the 28th of July until the 6th of August 2023.
