Get to know the Spar Proteas Players: Phumza Maweni

With only a day to go before the 2023 Netball World Cup commences at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in Cape Town, South Africa, Spar Proteas defender Phumza Maweni is excited to be playing in her third Netball World Cup tournament.

Standing as one of the most experienced defenders in world netball, Maweni's incredible netball journey began in June 2014 when she made her debut against Scotland, and her dedication led her to achieve an impressive milestone which was her 100th test during the 2022 Africa Netball World Cup Regional Qualifiers.

Hailing from the Eastern Cape, Maweni has been a regular standout for the Western Cape’s Southern Stings during the Telkom Netball League as her remarkable journey continues to flourish as she gears up for her third Netball World Cup appearance, building on her previous participation in the 2015 and 2019 tournaments.

The 38-year-old has also competed in two Commonwealth Games before, and she is also a member of the SA FAST5 Team which has made her presence on the court to continue to inspire players and fans alike as she also continues to etch her name in netball's history books.

Ahead of the 2023 Netball World Cup, Maweni is looking forward to facing Jamaica as they are drawn in the same pool as the Spar Proteas.

The Spar Proteas will firstly play against Wales on the 28th of July before facing Sri Lanka and Jamaica on the 29th and 30th of July respectively.

The 16-team global spectacle will take place on African soil for the first time since the competition was established in 1963 and it kicks off on the 28th of July until the 6th of August 2023.
