Gift Motupa to leave Sundowns

By Neo Poho

Despite his contract still left with two years before it expires, Mamelodi Sundowns striker Gift Motupa is set to leave the club during this transfer window.

Motupa joined Sundowns during the beginning of the 2020/21 season from Bidvest Wits after having a great spell with the former Johannesburg based side scoring 14 in his 37 appearances in all competitions.

However, Motupa has struggled to find his rhythm and form at Sundowns, making just 22 appearances in all competitions and scoring only three goals in the process.

Despite his contract only expiring at the end of June 2025, signs are set at his departure after he has stopped training with the club.

Having made only seven appearances during the 2022/23 season and all of them coming from the bench, Motupa stopped training with the defending DStv Premiership champions after the CAF Champions League semi-final first leg draw against Wydad Casablanca.

During his tenure at Sundowns, the 28-year-old won three league titles as well as one Nedbank Cup and an MTN 8 trophy.
